I’m Emily, Chief Visionary Officer from Ellimatta Consulting – the one behind the stories shared in this blog.

A little bit about me – I have always had a passion for agriculture. After completing my Bachelor of Ag Science, I went on to finish my PhD in human society. I now work in agricultural extension which helps me play to my strengths in communication and my passion for helping people be the best that they can be. I am also a farmer. My sister always said to me that I would marry a farmer and every time she said it, I would scoff at her and change the subject. As hard as it is to admit it, she was right. In 2019, I married a farmer. In the same week, we started trading as a partnership and took on his family business. Talk about baptism of fire!

This little project of mine is informed by my farming journey to date. It really started to come to life when I posted a survey a few months ago on Facebook to ask women what knowledge they wish they had when entering into farming. To say that I was overwhelmed by the responses I received from all over Australia would be an understatement. The stories I captured reaffirmed the sentiment that I too had been feeling, having married into a farming business only 18 months earlier.

Those who responded to my call shared their need and want for more – whether it be for themselves, their families or their business. Some said they wish they had more financial literacy and basic training in bookkeeping or business management, while others shared their yearning for mentoring and coaching. Some simply wanted a strong support network of likeminded women to share their ideas and experiences with.

So this blog is the start of my next adventure. For those that know me, I am incredibly impatient and want the world in the palm of my hand straight away, so taking some time to think about the best way to start this journey has pained me immensely. When talking about my vision, a mentor and dear friend simply asked “how about you just start a blog?” So that is what I am doing. I have big plans and a burning desire to see them all through, and this blog is simply the start. As they say – from little things, big things grow!

I am definitely not trying to take away from the incredible support networks that are already out there providing support to women in farming, and regional and rural communities. I am simply joining in – doing what I can to provide information and share my experiences that I feel would have been useful to me when coming into our farming business.
